SCORES of young people from rural communities in Gwanda District have, in recent months, undergone training in life-changing vocational skills designed to equip them for employment and entrepreneurship.
The youth have been trained in various disciplines, including nurse aide care, mortuary science, beauty therapy, and security services, thanks to a skills empowerment initiative led by Gwanda South legislator Dr Omphile Marupi, in partnership with private sector players and other stakeholders.
Some of the beneficiaries have already secured formal employment with reputable organisations while others are in the process of finalising job placements.
Dr Marupi, who is also the Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, said the initiative is transforming the prospects of young people in the district.
“The nurse aide training programme was introduced after recognising a growing need for home-based caregivers in rural areas, particularly for the elderly, pensioners and discharged patients who require continuous care,” said Dr Marupi.
He said approximately 30 nurse aides, 10 morticians and two beauty therapists have been trained so far. The empowerment drive began with security guard training in partnership with Mabaleka Security Services. Since its launch five months ago, the programme has already trained around 400 youths, with 250 now employed.
“This programme was introduced five months ago and has already trained about 400 youths. Around 250 are gainfully employed by security companies such as Nokel, Cadsec, local authorities and private individuals in and around Gwanda, providing security at schools and shops,” said Dr Marupi.
He praised the private security firms and other partners that have supported the initiative by offering employment opportunities to graduates, saying it demonstrates the power of collaborative efforts. “Our focus is to continue expanding these training opportunities to empower more youths with skills that give them a solid footing in life,” he added. — @mthabisi_mthire
