could have collapsed following the club’s acquisition of a new forward from Niger this week.
Gwekwerere yesterday told The Herald that he was scheduled to return to the South African Premiership soccer giants any time this week for training with the team after failing to do so at last month’s invitation.
Then, the Happy People were busy preparing for the back-to-back clashes against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 final and in a league game, leaving Gwekwerere with no chance to showcase his abilities and he had to return home.
While the former Moroka Swallows and Jomo Cosmos man was still hopeful of another dance with the SuperDiski, it seems things have been happening fast down south and on Monday Orlando Pirates unveiled a new player from Niger. The club gave 22-year-old Boubacar Talatou, who was a free agent, a three-year contract.
The Niger international plays both as a central midfielder or striker and his country is in the same African Cup of Nations qualifying group with South Africa
Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder Thanduyise Khuboni told Kick Off that Talatou is a great signing for Pirates, having played against him in the Nations Cup qualifying games this year.
“He is a top player and one of the best players in the Niger national team. I played against him and he was all over our defence, coming both behind the central striker and on the wings. I think he is a great signing for Pirates,” said Khuboni.
The Happy People have been looking for a striker to boost their attack, which appears to be struggling this season.
The treble champions, who lost only three games last season, have already lost three matches in the opening seven games of the 2011/12 Absa Premiership season.
The club’s strikers, such as former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCathy, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Amajita forward Bongani Ndulula, whose brace in the All-Africa Games last qualifying round first leg match in Johannesburg sunk the Young Warriors, are really yet to come to the party.
Moreso, the coming in of the West African saw the club exhausting their foreign quota of five players.
They already had Brazilian goalkeeper Getulio Vargas, Namibian striker Rudolf Bester, Malawian forward Chiukepo Msowoya and Zambian midfielder Isaac Chansa in their ranks.
Gunners captain Qadr Amini also tried his luck with Orlando Pirates during the pre-season and was again invited for further assessment after the Absa season had kicked off.
But it seems the Warriors leftback will also have to wait a little longer before securing a club in the Absa Premiership.
Unlike their rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates have not really enjoyed much success with Zimbabwean players with former Warriors defender Zvenyika Makonese being off-loaded by the club just before the start of this season.
