GWERU City Council has acquired four fire tenders to replace the ageing fleet.
City Mayor, Councillor Martin Chivhoko said the new fire tenders were bought under the Government- Belarus initiative while the fourth one was purchased by the council using internal fire levy funds.
“In light of the improved fleet levels, within the council’s plans, we have started working on establishing two fire sub-stations for Gweru, one in Senga and the second one at Mkoba Poly Clinic. This will reduce the reaction time and the costs of traveling from town to Mkoba or Senga as response will be immediate and such actions will save life and property,” he said.
Cllr Chivhoko said this year, the local authority is looking forward to receiving two ambulances to replace the old and non-functional ones.
“In total council requires six ambulances and we would have achieved 50 percent of that requirement and we hope to reach 100 percent by the end of 2024 into 2025,” he said.
Cllr Chivhoko said unfortunately, council manpower levels have not been spared from the mass exodus to greener pastures by trained personnel.
“To address the gap, the council has introduced a Volunteer Fire Fighting Training Programme which internally trains and absorbs where vacancies are available the trained fire personnel. We urge residents to apply for the Voluntary Fire Fighting Training Programme,” he said.
