The Gweru City Council (GCC) is actively seeking development partners to restore maternity services at Mkoba 1 Clinic, which has been non-operational for some time.
Presently, maternity services are offered only at Mtapa, Senga and Mkoba polyclinics, resulting in increased pressure on these facilities.
At a meeting with the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WiCOZ), Ward 6 Councillor Lovemore Choto stressed the urgency of reopening the Mkoba 1 Clinic.
“We are looking for donors to help us construct a new maternity wing,” he said.
“The city cannot fund the project on its own, but we are not folding our hands.”
Clr Choto noted that Gweru’s maternity services are not only for the city’s residents, but also nearby communities like Lower Gweru and Chiundura. “People from neighbouring areas rely on our clinics for initial care before being referred to public hospitals,” he explained.
WiCOZ Gweru chairperson Ms Merjory Makunere expressed concern over the clinic’s closure, stating: “Mkoba Polyclinic is overwhelmed. The maternity ward at Mkoba 1 must be reopened to ease the burden.”
The appeal for partnerships aims to ensure that all expectant mothers receive essential care.
