Gweru City Council has turned down a residents’ requests to review downwards some of the rates on the new $ 2.9 billion budget.

The residents had, through the Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA), sought to have the newly-approved budget slashed on the basis that an average house owner in the city could not afford to part with the minimal $15 000 per month which is now required.

In a letter seen by this publication and addressed to GRRA, chairperson Mr Connelius Selipiwe, acting town clerk Mr Douglas Chikwekwe said the council could not afford to cut its budget.
