Gweru City Council has stepped up efforts transform itself into a sustainable city by sprucing up its properties such as swimming pools, cemeteries, halls and Ascot Stadium.

Speaking during a pre-budget consultation recently, Gweru City Council Town Clerk Ms Elizabeth Gwatipedza said the city is poised to transform its properties into world-class facilities in line with the Government’s open for business approach.

“We have rehabilitated some council properties and the process is ongoing. So far, we have spruced up our major social amenity property and community service facilities. Council rehabilitated the town pool and Mkoba pool by installation of new electrical fittings and replacement of the chlorinator.

“We are planning to lease out the pools and redeploy council employees in other divisions so that we can realise more money from rentals,” said Ms Gwatipedza.

“Council acquired a dewatering pump for graves at Mkoba and Mtapa cemeteries during the rainy season.

“Three evacuation gates were erected at Ascot Stadium. Construction of dressing rooms is currently in progress and we have so far used $7 000 in the rehabilitation of Ascot Stadium.”

Ms Gwatipedza said the council has also purchased two tractor- drawn slashers and five lawn trimmers at a cost of $20 000.
