HARARE-Bulawayo Road will be temporarily closed to general motorists on Monday, September 28 as authorities introduce traffic restrictions around the National Sports Stadium ahead of the Africa Cup of Nation Group match between the country’s senior men’s football team, The Warriors and the DRC national team, The Leopards.
The match is expected to kick-off at 6 pm. According to a notice issued by City Parking, the traffic measures will be in place from 4 pm to 9 pm to manage anticipated high traffic volumes in the area.
The carriageway inbound towards the Harare city centre will be closed to general motorists, with a police checkpoint at the intersection of Bulawayo Road and Harare Drive restricting access to match officials and motorists with valid match tickets.
“All other vehicles will be diverted onto Harare Drive toward Solomon Mujuru Drive,” read the statement.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes, particularly Solomon Mujuru Drive, commonly known as Kirkman Road to avoid congestion and delays around the stadium.
However, outbound traffic from the city centre through the National Sports Stadium area will not be affected by the measures.
“Motorists leaving the City Centre will experience no disruptions and can use their normal route,” read the statement.
The temporary restrictions are expected to affect motorists travelling towards the city centre during the evening peak period, with authorities urging the public to plan journeys in advance.
City Parking said the measures were being implemented to ensure the smooth movement of traffic during the match and reduce congestion around the National Sports Stadium.
Motorists have been encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow directions from traffic police and road marshals during the period.
