Gweru City Council, which has been grappling with refuse collection in most high-density suburbs has engaged private players to collect garbage.
Addressing a full council meeting, Gweru Mayor Councillor Charles Chikozho said private players will collect garbage from Woodlands Park, Herdfordshire, Nashville, Ascot and KMP Senga where refuse collection has been poor of late.
He said they had secured private trucks from the community. He said the move was a stop-gap measure as residents were now resorting to dumping.
“The trucks will start collecting garbage as soon as possible as we have already engaged trucks, which are 3,5 tonnes to 10 tonnes from the local community.”
He said the trucks will collect rubbish from the suburbs and deposit it at a designated point where it will be collected by council refuse trucks.
Meanwhile, council health services director Mr Sam Sekenhamo said council plans to purchase 30 skip bins, one refuse compactor truck, one self-tipping trailer and one tractor by the end of the year.
Solid waste management has become a growing problem for the city of Gweru. Council is also yet to decommission a dump-site in Woodlands Park that has become a health hazard.
