A Gweru family lost a car and valuables worth close to US$12 000 to a gang of six men who invaded their house in Harben Park on Sunday.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the robbery case.
“A gang of six men invaded a home and robbed the family of cash and valuables worth US$ 11 980,” he said.
“The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Harben Park, Gweru.”
Inspector Mahoko said at about 0020 hours on Sunday, Mary Chakamanga (60) and her 24-year-old son were sleeping in separate bedrooms when six men attempted to break the door but failed.
“They smashed a window pane and demanded cash. Chakamanga handed over $500 to them and called out for help,” he said.
Inspector Mahoko said the suspects eventually managed to enter the house and ransacked it.
They took $200 from the complainant’s handbag, four cellphones, an iPad, a Huawei tablet, an HP laptop and some groceries.
The robbers assaulted the complainant with an iron rod, demanding more cash.
“They then demanded keys to a Toyota Rav that was parked outside and were given. They loaded the loot into the car and drove off in it,” said Inspector Mahoko.
The vehicle was discovered the next morning parked near Go Beer Farm in Northlea, Gweru, with its battery missing.
“Total value of the stolen stolen is $11 980. We are appealing to anyone with information that can help in the investigation of the case to approach any police station,” he said.
