Gweru kombi drivers in rare campaign

GWERU taxi operators yesterday embarked on a rare campaign drive for Zanu-PF when they teamed up and drove to different areas including the Central Business District blowing their vehicles’ horns urging residents to vote for the revolutionary party in today’s harmonised elections.Business came to a standstill in Gweru’s CBD on Monday evening when the taxi operators formed a long convoy skidding and hooting while shouting Zanu-PF slogans especially the revolutionary party’s popular slogan “bhora mugedhi, Ibhola egedini. goal!!”.

There was a traffic jam for close to 30 minutes along the City-Mkoba route as the taxi drivers took the campaign to Mkoba suburb.
The cabmen started with Mkoba Village Six before invading other villages where curious residents went out of their houses to investigate. “This type of campaign is one of its kind.

It’s so effective because some of us were forced to get out of houses to investigate when we heard the noise and voices of taxi men. We then learnt that it was just a campaign where people were being urged to vote for Zanu-PF,” said Mr Ronath Mambo of Mkoba Village 13.

In separate interviews yesterday, the taxi drivers said they were impressed by President Mugabe and Zanu-PF’s policies and were eager to see the revolutionary party emerging victorious in today’s elections.

“Zanu-PF is a people’s party and as taxi drivers, we have not been attending some important Zanu-PF rallies because of the nature of our work. We then told ourselves that as Gweru taxi drivers, we owe the party and should do our own unique campaign for the revolutionary party as we approach these important elections.

We got some fuel from Zanu-PF party candidates for Gweru Urban and Mkoba constituencies for us to conduct this campaign,” said a taxi driver, who only identified himself as Mr Mapanga.

Another cabman, Mr Derrick Moyo said their campaign was very effective and successful. “When we visited the suburbs, many people went out of their houses and got our message that we should go out and vote for the revolutionary party,”,” he said.
