Gweru Mayor, Councillor Hamutendi Kombayi stole the show during the United States Envoy’s tour of Naletali Ruins near Shangani when he pitched up for the trip in complete army wear gear. Clr Kombayi became the centre of attraction with his army gear during the tour that featured Ambassador Mr Bruce Wharton and his team.

Most of the touring team, which included journalists and a team from the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe, could not help stealthily throwing glances at the Gweru mayor instead of admiring the ruins.

The mayor was accompanied by other council officials from Gweru City Council on the Naletali Ruins tour.
In an interview, Clr Kombayi said the army colours outfit was his favourite attire when attending high profile meetings.

He said he always dresses that way whenever attending important functions. Clr Kombayi said he was surprised by people who appeared puzzled by his choice of dressing.

“It’s not my first time wearing this outfit. I often dress this way whenever I am attending important functions as is the case today (Wednesday) where we are hosting the US envoy,” he said.

It is against the laws of Zimbabwe for civilians to put on army regalia.
