The City of Gweru has warned businesses to desist from improperly disposing of waste, particularly dumping refuse at skip bin points after collection times that is causing unsanitary conditions.

The City of Gweru spokesperson, Vimbai Chingwaramuse said council’s public health by-laws (Statutory Instrument 12 of 1982) Section 58 (4) requires that “The owner or occupier of any premises shall place or cause the bins or other receptacles referred to in subsection (1)to be placed in a convenient position on the premises in a place easily accessible for the purpose of the collection and removal by the employees of the council of the refuse contained therein.”

“Additionally, Statutory Instrument 13 of 1982 Section 58 (1) stipulates “Class ‘A’ refuse shall, pending removal be deposited only in approved galvanised iron bins or some other approved type of receptacle and the occupier of the premises on which such bins or other receptacles are kept shall keep such bins or other receptacles properly always covered with close-fitting lids,” she said.

She said that all business operators are instructed to have adequate, approved refuse bins within 14 days.

“Refuse must be kept in covered bins with close-fitting lids. Place receptacles in the sanitary lane or on the front pavement between 5 am and 7 am daily,” she said.

“Failure to comply with this is in contravention of the abovementioned by-laws and will result in prosecution without further notice.”
