Gweru shootout armed robber, jailed 20 years

AN armed robber who was arrested following a shootout with the police this month has been jailed 20 years.

Obedience Takaedza Mutasa was jailed when he appeared before the Zvishavane Regional Magistrate Court this week.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed.

“Reference is made to the statement issued by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on 20th March 2026 regarding a shootout incident which occurred in Gweru on 19th March 2026, which led to the arrest of Obedience Takaedza Mutasa,” he said.

“Following the arrest and subsequent court proceedings, Obedience Takaedza Mutasa appeared before the Zvishavane Regional Court, where he was convicted and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.”

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has since warned individuals and criminal syndicates against resisting, obstructing or attacking police officers in the course of their lawful duties.

Comm Nyathi said, “Any such actions will be met with the full force of the law and offenders will face severe consequences, including lengthy custodial sentences.”
