Gweru sisters start hospitality school

From just running a salon,  two sisters are now proud owners of a Beauty, Tourism and Hospitality school.

From humble beginnings in 2019 when they were just operating a beauty parlour, Memory (35) and Kudzai (33) Chikowore (pictured above) are now the talk of Gweru.

They manufacture soaps and scrubs, which they use at Sisters Training College.

Sisters Training College is one of the 140 exhibitors at this year’s Midlands Show that is taking place at Gweru Showgrounds.

What makes these sisters unique is their role in employment creation and innovation.

In an interview Kudzai said only in 2019, they were running a beauty parlour in Gweru’s city centre.

“We grew up loving anything to do with beauty. So we opened a beauty parlour where we used to attend to clients’ needs in terms of hair do and general make-up,” she said.

Kudzai said they later started engaging students on attachment from other colleges or training centres before they thought of running one.

“So one day we decided to offer something different to students. We decided to register our own training centre. After doing all the necessary paperwork we decided to use the name Sisters Training Centre,” she said.

Kudzai said the name came about from the fact that they are sisters.

“As blood sisters we settled for that trade name. And we then opened a training centre in the CBD,” she said.

From starting with less than five students, they now boast of 21 doing beauty therapy and 40 doing Tourism and Hospitality.

“We had to engage qualified people to assist us achieve our passion. We later moved out of the CBD to the light industries,” she said.

Kudzai said they are now making items used at the school such as bath soaps as opposed to importing the materials as they were doing in the past.

Kudzai said they are motivated by the philosophy that only Zimbabweans can build their country.
