THE Gweru City Council is set to introduce a new parking management system which is expected to be more efficient.
The new parking management system would have display terminals and thermal printers and accessories.
Most local authorities have resorted to clamping of vehicles as part of revenue collection as ratepayers continue to default on their payments.
In a tender notice yesterday, Gweru City Council invited bids for the “Supply and install a parking management system …. motor vehicle clamps (500).”
Gweru introduced the parking disc programme in June last year triggering an outcry from motorists.
The city charges $1 per hour for parking at designated zones and R5 for 30 minutes. A fine for displaying a parking disc which is not ticked is $45.
An official with the local authority told Business Chronicle that the idea was mooted after it was discovered that the current management system was not working to full capacity.
“The idea of a parking management system with display terminals and thermal printers is to be employed so as to ensure that vehicles are well managed,” the official said.
“The employees we have are currently not working to full capacity, we hope that the new system will assist in providing full capacity results.”
The use of the communication radio system will also upgrade the operations of the council employees.
The new system, officials said, would complement the already available system, a strategy that would enhance the operations of council.
