Gweru City Council will, beginning Monday next week, introduce a $25 commuter omnibus ranking disc in a move that is meant to decongest the city’s commuter omnibus termini. In an interview yesterday, the city council’s deputy director of engineering services, Engineer Irvin Muzondo, said the local authority is also set to launch a blitz on unregistered commuter omnibuses which he said were causing havoc and unnecessary congestion at the city’s commuter omnibus termini.
“The city council has managed to retain some order in the central business district by introducing the parking disc system. There is, however, still chaos at the city’s commuter omnibus termini and we are working on introducing ranking discs for commuter omnibuses so as to do away with hundreds of commuters which are operating illegally in the city,” he said.
Eng Muzondo said 80 percent of commuter omnibuses in the city were operating illegally without proper registration and licences for the various routes they were plying.
He said the local authority will, beginning Monday, deploy municipal police at all the city’s commuter omnibus termini to monitor the situation.
Eng Muzondo said the municipal officers will clamp all unregistered kombis or motorists found flouting the city’s traffic by-laws.
“The exercise will start in full swing on Monday and we believe this will bring order at our city omnibus termini which have been congested of late. Some kombis are now picking up passengers at undesignated points in the CBD taking advantage of the city’s laxity in effecting its by-laws,” he said.
