Gweru United honour outstanding players

RECENTLY promoted Zifa Central Soccer League outfit, Gweru United, has honoured its outstanding players who guided the team’s promotion into the second tier division.“Pisa Pisa’’, as the Gweru based outfit is affectionately known, finished at the top of the table in the Zifa Midlands Division 2A after amassing 35 points  in the nine-team league.

The biggest winner of the night at a colourful awards’ ceremony held at a local hotel was the club captain, Whatmore Muzondo who scooped the Player of the Year accolade and for his efforts took home $100.

Young Tatenda Pfunde bagged the Most Improved Player gong which carried $25 in prize money while Chengerai Marime was the club’s Most Consistent Player and for his efforts got $25.

For his eight-goal haul Tafadzwa Kunyangwe took home the $30 Golden Boot award.

Patron of the club and Gweru mayor Hamutendi Kombayi reiterated that the former Super League outfit would compete in the CSL with the sole purpose of making a return to the Premiership.

“I’m happy that we’ve made a giant step towards our return to the glory days and as so patron we’re going to do everything in our power to ensure that we compete in the CSL.

“Gweru is a big town which needs more teams in the Premiership and bring back the days when rivalry such as the Gweru derby which pitted Gweru United and Bata Power,” he said.

Club secretary, Asibu Mususa assured the city fathers that the team would fight for Premiership football status.

He said the executive will take advantage of the off season to beef the side up with youngsters to promote junior development in Gweru.
