FORMER Premiership side, Gweru United, has clinched the Zifa Midlands Division 2A ticket into the Zifa Central Soccer League after amassing 35 points to finish on top of the nine-team league.“Pisa Pisa” as the former Super League outfit was affectionately known, was two points clear of second placed Todal Mine which could only manage 33 points.
In the Division 2B league, Ivan Hoe of Kwekwe also managed to shrug off stiff competition from ZPC Munyati to secure a Division One berth, two points clear with 50 points in the 11-team league. Going into the last round of matches, Ivan Hoe needed an outright victory over Grain Medics while second placed ZPC Munyati also needed to win against BM Academy and hope the log leaders lose. In the end both teams won on a three nil scoreline to hand the Division One ticket to Ivan Hoe.
Ivan Hoe and Gweru United will join two other teams from Matabeleland South who will also be promoted.
Gweru United secretary, Barbafald Mangwende could not hide his joy at the prospects of “Pisa Pisa” gaining promotion and vowed that they would do well in Division One on their way to the Premiership.
“Playing Division Two football for Gweru United was to re-strategise and I’m happy that we’ve gained promotion into Division One. In fact we’re just passing through Division One and going back to the Premiership.
“We want to bring back the old days and come next season we will be ready for our campaign as we go back where we belong,” he said.
