GWERU Bowling club were crowned the 2015 October 5s national bowls tournament at City Bowling Club on Sunday. Captained by Timothy Machisa, the team of Ignatius Manunure, Jabulani Sibanda, Oscar Kabiya and Aaron Chilundo got the better of 12 other teams that took part in the last event of the bowling calendar.

Gweru Bowling Club managed 71 points and were tied with Alexandra Sports Club but they had an aggregate score of 102 against their opponents’ 78.

“We played as a team but competition was tough, we were well prepared for the event as it is one of the tournaments we focus on a lot,” said Machisa.

“We have young players who are passionate about the sport and they are doing well.

“We have been building up a strong team and the results are coming out. The guys did well and this was our best tournament.

“We have to maintain the standards and going back to Gweru we will encourage each other to work hard.”

The tournaments’ chief sponsors, NSSA, said they will continue to support it.

“We take it as a social corporate responsibility to sponsor the tournament and some of our workers were novices here and so they did quite well coming out on position seven,” NSSA communications manager, Philimon Shereni, said.
