NEWSPAPERS still have a huge role to play, even on the challenging terrain created by the advent of social media.
Tabloid newspapers like H-Metro have found themselves having to go the extra mile, just to remain relevant, in an environment where most of their targeted stories are the staple diet of the social media conversations.
But, there is no substitute for quality and, more importantly, for the TRUTH.
It’s refreshing for a newspaper like H-Metro to find that, even in the heat of the social media craze, it remains a benchmark for reference when it’s time to check for the truth.
The Oxman’s challenge, hosted by H-Metro, to establish whether strongman Arnold Zikhali was able to consume a mountain of food, as he claimed, was a huge hit among readers.
And, yesterday, during the live updates of the trial of Mai TT, H-Metro became a reference point, for those who were following the proceedings on social media.
Some unregulated platforms spread the fake news that she had been handed a suspended sentence.
However, many were not convinced and decided to wait for the updates from this newspaper’s social media handles.
When we eventually reported that judgment had been deferred, it helped cast some light on the confusion.
