AFTER holding their track and field meet as part of the build-up to next year’s competition, Harare Athletic Board chairperson Cousinet Simunyu says they are hoping to have another event before the new season begins.
Most of the coaches and athletes are now in full swing of their pre-season preparations and the HAB competition held on Sunday at the University of Zimbabwe provided a platform to gauge their readiness in a competitive environment.
Simunyu was pleased with the interest from the athletes and noted that with several major competitions scheduled for next year, local competition is going to be key in preparing athletes seeking qualifying standards. “The pre-season event is critical because coaches and athletes both need to assess their performance since they were on a break. “So, we need to see how far they have gone with their preparations. Are they ready for 2025, are they ready to tackle all the events that will come in 2025?
“We have the World Championships, we have the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games that will be happening in Namibia. “So, this is quite important for coaches, athletes, and administrators as well . . . So, this event is huge on our calendar,” said Simunyu. Some of the senior athletes who attended Sunday’s event include Ngoni Makusha and Gerren Muwishi, who represented the country at the African Senior Championships in June.
