SHIHAN Wilfred Mashaya has continued with his outstanding performances after clinching four medals in various wrap categories at the Welsh Open 2024.

The tournament was held under the World Martial Arts Championship (WMAC).

He won two gold medals and two silver medals in the traditional weapons and freestyle weapons categories and the creative weapons and extreme weapons categories.

Mashaya was grateful for the love and support shown by his fellow Zimbabweans who travelled from England to support him, and all the sponsors who have been backing him.

In an interview with Zimpapers Sports, he said: “I am happy that I managed to raise Zimbabwe’s flag high once again. It’s satisfying that I came and managed to earn the fruits of my hard work and I am taking medals back home.

“I am looking forward to taking the skills earned back home and giving all this to the youngsters back home, for them to replicate my achievements so that the sport will keep on thriving in our country.

“This is always my wish and dream.

“It’s not an easy thing to represent the country, you need to be prepared and give it your all.”

“The competition attracted several countries including Wales, England, Nepal, Spain, Zimbabwe, Ukraine, and India, among others.”

Despite the stiff competition, Mashaya managed to show resilience and display his skills.

“I am happy that I managed to compete well and also showcase my talent,” said Mashaya.

“It was challenging but I managed to maintain my ground, have confidence, believe in myself, and do it for our country Zimbabwe.

“It is always humbling to see yourself being appreciated by other athletes from different countries which shows that the work we are putting in is earning dividends.
