HAIG Park Junior School were crowned the 2018 Winter Chess Festival champions at the weekend at Windview Primary in Zimre Park, Ruwa.
Alfred Beit, who were the defending champions, failed to defend their crown while Haig Park had seven medals to claim the championship.
The tournament featured several age-groups from Under-8 to Under-15 with participants drawn from Harare, Ruwa, Bindura, Mvuma and Mount Darwin.
The tournament is growing with each passing year as it attracted 17 schools in 2016, 20 in 2017 while this year, it attracted 20 primary schools with 193 pupils participating. Windview school sports director, Prince Nechavava, told The Herald the school has produced grandmasters who have represented the country at international level.
“We have developed five players who represented Zimbabwe in 2016 Africa junior chess championships in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. “Among the players, three were part of Zimbabwe junior chess.’’
Nechavava said the parents were also very supportive.
The floating shield that was won by Haig Park was donated by one of the parents.
