Nyamande Primary School under Goromonzi District is appealing for donations from well-wishers to repair buildings that were destroyed by a hailstorm recently. The affected buildings include classrooms, the administration block and teachers’ houses.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Energy Mutodi was the first to highlight the school’s plight after he visited it to assess the damages.
Deputy Minister Mutodi is the National Assembly Member for Goromonzi West where the school is located.
Speaking to The Herald, the school head Mr Webster Mafuriranwa, said the money they were quoted to repair the damages was beyond their reach. “All three structures were affected on the same day as a result of a hailstorm recently,” he said. “We have approached some stakeholders for assistance and we remain hopeful.
“Our enrolment stands at 1 270 pupils who are accommodated in just 15 classrooms. We have a staff complement of 31 that share nine houses.
“Already, the figures reveal a shortage of structures, which has been worsened by the destruction. The destroyed housing unit accommodated four teachers and we plan to re-roof them before the onset of the rains.”
The school operates a hot sitting programme.
“We need asbestos sheets, beams, cement, asbestos nails, 4 inch wire nails, IBR nails, 6 inch wire nails, termite poison, wall plates, steel, blue splash contractors acrylic pva paint among others,” said Mr Mafuriranwa.
Quotations seen by this publication range from $815 to $4 400 and $3 300 bond all depending on availability of materials in stock.
Those wishing to donate cash or materials can visit the school which is about 47 kilometres from Harare in Domboshava. Those making monetary contributions can deposit the money in the school’s ZB Bank Account Number 4129 454554-200, Borrowdale Branch.
