Scores of people in Kariba’s oldest high-density suburbs Mahombekombe and Zvimba district’s Ward 34 were left homeless after rains accompanied by heavy wind destroyed homes between Monday and yesterday.
They were no reports of casualties although the Civil Protection Units (CPU) from both districts said they were still gathering information.
Kariba district development coordinator and CPU chairman Mr Anele Gumbochumo confirmed that various homes, most of which were constructed over 50 years ago during when Kariba Dam was built were destroyed.
He said CPU had been activated with Kariba’s Ward 5 Councillor Hatina Olipha Chiriseri confirming the activities by various Government departments to help the affected.
The majority are in need of temporary shelter and food.
The rains destroyed walls and blew roofs of the several homes.
Zvimba District Coordinator Mr Joseph Manyurapasi said the heavy rains that destroyed homes also uprooted trees and damaged power lines.
