HUNDREDS of theatre buffs, prectioners and some of the who-is-who in the country at the weekend turned up for the once-off staging of renowned playwright William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” at 7Arts Theatre in Avondale. The performance was part of the world tour of Shakespeare’s play organised by Global Theatre as a way of celebrating the late renowned playwright and actor, who was born in April 450 years ago.
The cast was superb, especially considering the fact that it comprised of actors taken from many parts of the world.
In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Rooftop media and communication officer Robert Tapfumaneyi said was happy with turnout although it was not easy staging such show.
Rooftop Promotions was responsible for the staging of the play in the country
“Arrangements for the show was such a difficult task, but thanks to organisation’s team work led by our producer Daves Guzha and the support we got from our traditional partners, the event went well. When Globe Theatre agreed to bring once in a life time Shakespeare’s Hamlet show it no longer became a Rooftop Promotions show alone and that’s why you saw the engagement of ZTA so as to take advantage of this performance and sell Zimbabwe brand as a tourist destination and we hope the 17 member cast team will do that to every country they are visiting,” he said.
He said the show was an eye-opener to local theatre sector.
“We hope this helped the theatre sector to grow as an industry as this also gives other international theatre production houses confidence to come to Zimbabwe and do collaborations with local production houses, creating employment for various actors and the second half of the year promises to be busy,” said Tapfumaneyi.
