Handball body happy

Ray Bande Mutare Bureau
THE Zimbabwe Handball Federation, the only visible national sporting association during the just-ended NAPH ball games finals in Mutare, have facilitated the inclusion of the sport on the primary schools annual ball games menu.

Until this year, handball was being played at secondary school and tertiary games level, with primary schools not competing in the sport.

Bulawayo Province were the inaugural winners of the girls’ handball NAPH 2017 competition, while Midlands scooped the boys’ category gold medal.

ZHF was represented at the NAPH Games by its president Stewart Sanhewe, who handed over a donation of handball regalia to the team that will represent the nation in the COSSASA Games in Lesotho later next month.

Sanhewe said ZHF have a programme dubbed “Handball at Schools” in which they aim to increase participation of school-going children in handball.

“We are excited that we have managed to facilitate the inclusion of handball in the NAPH ball games for the first time this year.

“This is in line with our ‘Handball in Schools’ programme, under which we aim to increase the participation of school-going children in handball.

“Our aim is to have handball as the second most popular sport in the country after football. The International Handball Federation actually seconded a Germany instructor to Zimbabwe to help in the technical improvement of the game in the country.

“This was after realisation of the potential in Zimbabwe as far as handball is concerned.

“We actually witnessed fierce competition during the NAPH games ,which is ample evidence that if the game is promoted and marketed well, Zimbabwe stands a chance of winning medals in international competitions simply because we have the talent,” said Sanhewe.

Meanwhile, Team Zimbabwe for the COSSASA games, which was selected during the just-ended NAPH Games will go into camp on August 14 to 27 at Northlea High in Bulawayo.
