The Municipality of Gwanda last week received a boost for their security section after a Harare-based businessman who originally comes from Gwanda District donated uniforms and work equipment to aid them in the execution of their duties.
The donations came after it was revealed that the council’s police have gone for over 10 years without handcuffs, batons and waist belts.
The businessman, Mr Eugene Moyo, who is the chief executive officer for Fedjust Zimbabwe donated 60 handcuffs, 60 batons and 60 waist belts.
Speaking during the donation, Gwanda Mayor Councillor Thulani Moyo said the donation came at a time when they were appealing to residents to assist.
“The security department is the face of the town and everyone who comes to the Municipality of Gwanda will be entrusting their safety on us. For a decade or so, our municipality police have been guarding the municipality property without handcuffs, batons and proper uniforms.
“We are the governing body and we were given powers by the Central Government that the livelihood of the citizens can improve through us. We cannot execute duties without empowering those in the system,” he said.
The mayor emphasised the importance of unity and good relations for the transformation of the town at the same time expressing his gratitude for the donation.
“The President is encouraging us to engage and partner with the locals, our council cannot be upgraded by the Central Government only but we are supposed to take the initiative on our own to improve and upgrade and achieve the Vision 2030 of an upper middle-class economy.
“I am looking forward to seeing our municipal police wearing Presidential Guard attires which they will wear during events like Independence Day as well as when they are guarding council premises and reservoirs. Today, we got overwhelming support, from one of our own Gwanda citizen who was born and bred at Mtshazo here in Gwanda District. We are looking forward to receiving more donations as he promised,” said the mayor.
Speaking during the donation presentation, Mr Moyo said he was proud of doing a marvellous deed in his home town as it improves service delivery.
“Gwanda as a town was established many years ago and has grown to be the provincial capital for Matabeleland South. We are proud to be associated with this town hence we have decided to donate.
“We believe that the well-functioning of the council operations is very important including the safety of all town citizens. I urge our council to go forward improving service delivery for a neat and efficient town. Having been born in this area, I feel the close attachment to the Gwanda community,” he said.
The council also received a donation of raincoats for the town street cleaners from a renowned businessman King Afgan.
They have been working in the rains without protective clothing.
