HARARE Central Police Station holding cells have been closed to pave way for major renovations.
The facelift is aimed at modernising policing facilities.
During the renovations, suspects will be taken to other police stations to allow work to proceed within the agreed timeframe.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the renovations, which are being carried out by Mcheken Contractors, are expected to be completed by November this year.
He said Chief Inspector Pinky Rufaro Mataruka toured the premises with contractors and the work is scheduled to run for about 90 days.
“Police have contracted a private company to carry out massive renovations at Harare Central Police Station,” said Comm Nyathi. He said the upgrades will include the construction of new holding cells with improved ablution facilities, new roofing sheets, and replacement of sewer and water pipes.
Harare Central Police Station houses the provincial headquarters and offices of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
