HARARE has been selected as one of the five cities that will proceed with the pilot phase of the African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC) action research.
The Glen View Area 8 Furniture Complex is being used as the place of study and testing of research innovations.
The other four cities are Nairobi, Kenya, Lagos, and Accra.
This was revealed during a City-level update meeting on Friday by Dialogue on Shelter Trust.
It was attended by City of Harare officials, University of Zimbabwe researchers, Glen View 8 complex representatives, civil society and other stakeholders.
Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, Dialogue on Shelter Programmes Director / City-led ACRC project in Harare, George Masimba, said there is need to transform the area and the livelihoods of the stall holders.
“Under the implementation phase, the City and its stakeholders will come up with catalytic interventions that will respond to the challenges being faced at Glen View Area 8 Furniture Complex including upgrading infrastructure (water and sewer), waste management issues, and the need to address some of the perennial challenges such as fire outbreaks,” he said.
“There is also a need to support the enterprises such as building capacity in business development.”
The Glen View Area 8 Furniture Complex Management Chairperson, Tawanda Utete, said the complex is in need of running water and recycling centres for glue bottles and wood shavings.
He added there is need for firefighting and first aid capacity building training courses for some of the stall holders in order to minimise the risk of fire disasters in the area.
“Awareness campaigns on waste and fire management are critical,” Utete said.
