Harare mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume says the City of Harare has so far installed 60 000 prepaid water meters around the capital through its public private partnership with Helcraw.

Cllr Mafume made the revelation at the 1946th Ordinary Council meeting held at Town House on Wednesday.

He told the same meeting he received communication from leading beverages maker Delta indicating the company’s water bills have jumped 76 percent.

“Can you check their bills. Let’s look at our charges with a view that Government has given an ease of doing business approach so let us not increase our charges unnecessarily,” he said.

Cllr Mafume called on the city to build mini power stations.

“The city is dark. Mabelreign residents were complaining that crimes are increasing because of darkness,” he said.

“Let’s look at what a locality needs for itself, we create that capacity and we sell to residents. Let’s create those mini power stations for each locality. Let’s create a department, electricity is a big issue.

“Everytime I go out, people are complaining that the city is dark. Crime is increasing, accidents are increasing. Communities are willing to participate and help us. So let’s have a coordinated approach to that aspect so the city has light.”
