Harare City councillors remember employees who died in the line of duty

HARARE City Councillors today observed a minute of silence at a full council meeting in honour of three employees who died at Morton Jaffray Waterworks last week.

Chairing the 1942nd Ordinary council meeting at Townhouse, Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume said council was disturbed by the incident.

“We have reached the end of the year. We recorded three fatalities again in this fourth and last quarter, that gives us five,” he said.

“And I think HR and our relevant NEC must look into this issue, if it requires that we set up a committee to investigate these incidents either at the NEC or council level and we look at our safety and health protocols as to why this is happening.

“And unfortunately, others are perishing trying to rescue the other person, so I think there’s need for drills to understand that if one is in danger, what do the others do to avoid a situation where everybody falls into the same danger.

“We must understand what happened and where we need to improve. This must be done with immediate effect. So HR must sit down and find out how that will be solved, either at NEC level, together with the workers’ representatives or at council level.

He said if it’s recommended that an enquiry with independent people should be constituted, it should be done.
