NEWLY elected Harare councillors are set to elect the mayor and deputy mayor today following their swearing-in on Thursday to run the city’s affairs for the next five years.
A total of 59 councillors were sworn in, 5 councillors from the Zanu PF party and 40 councillors from the CCC party.
Fourteen councillors got into council through the women’s quota system and of the women’s quota system, four were from Zanu PF party while 10 were from CCC party.
Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province Mr Tafadzwa Muguti is expected to address the council’s first meeting today where the councillors will then elect the mayor and his deputy.
Addressing the councillors at the swearing-in last week town clerk Eng Hosea Chisango said: “The first council meeting will be held on Monday and it will be addressed by the secretary for provincial affairs and devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province Mr Tafadzwa Muguti.
“The election of the mayor and the deputy mayor, as per statutes will take place on Monday (today) at the council’s first meeting at Town House.”
There was pandemonium at the swearing-in of the newly elected Harare councillors yesterday as they took their oath of office at the capital’s Town House.
Unruly opposition CCC supporters who came to witness the ceremony wearing party regalia sang and threw yellow balloons in the council chambers from the gallery, interrupting the acting chamber secretary Warren Chiwawa who presided over the proceedings together with town clerk Hosea Chisango.
The newly sworn-in Harare City Council for 2023-2028, yesterday went through the rigours of a very important induction workshop.
The lively sessions, created hope for the new council as councillors dissected their professional syllabus and manual, ably supported by officials from the parent Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
