Leslie Gwindi said yesterday that authorities were hopeful the situation would have improved by today as engineers were rectifying the problem.
“The major burst occurred on Friday night and our personnel has been on the ground throughout the weekend. We have been reviewing the progress at regular intervals and are satisfied with the progress. Finer touches are being put as we speak,” he said.
In the meantime, most residents in the eastern suburbs have been without water for the last four days.
Mr Gwindi said due to the fault, it would take some time before normal supplies return to the affected areas but expectations were that by the end of day tomorrow they would have been restored.
“It is a pity that most of the piping system in the city is old, but we are progressively doing the best we can to replace them,” he said.
