The new system has brought sanity to streets in the Central Business District, but has at the same time led to the flooding of the Fourth Street and Park Lane parking lots.
The on-street parking, which was introduced in July this year, costs US$1 per hour while motorists are charged US$1 for a day at the parking lots.
This has seen a scramble for space at Fourth Street and Park Lane in the mornings.
There are two parkades owned by the city and two private ones.
The cost of parking at the Joina City parkade is US$1 per hour or US$50 per month, while the one at the corner of Sam Nujoma Street and Nelson Mandela Avenue charges about US$60 a month.
City parkades charge US$1 per day or US$20 per month, while parking lots cost US$1 per entry or US$20 monthly.
City parkades and parking lots accommodate less than 2 000 vehicles and council officials yesterday said the parking space could no longer cater for the growing number of cars now on Harare’s streets.
