Harare’s junior mayor, Cllr Otheniel Gotora, said the junior council is deeply saddened by the incident where a 13-year-old girl was raped at Rezende rank.

The junior council has pledged to work with the senior council and authorities to make sure the city is safe for both the girl and boy child.

“Recently, I was made aware of a situation that took place in Harare, a horrific event where a girl was lured by a group of men into a kombi and raped,” he said.

“We are deeply saddened as the junior council of this terrible event that recently took place.

“I’m ashamed to say this happened in our city, our home, a place we all call home, a place where more than a million people live together peacefully.

“As the youth, we are supposed to protect each other and help each other. As the youth council, it is our responsibility to ensure such things do not ever happen again.”

Cllr Gotora said the junior council will try its best to ensure that this never happens again.

“The rights of the male child and the girl child are equally important to us all and in that situation, the poor girl’s rights were violated, and she was put in a position where she could not protect herself,” he said.

“Such things should not happen in our home, our lovely city, the Sunshine City.”

Cllr Gotora urged youths to work together, to respect each other’s rights so that such things never happen again.
