A Tynwald Truck Repairs worker has appeared in court after allegedly stealing ZAR260 000 from a friend in a failed vehicle import deal involving a Ford Ranger in South Africa.
Chamunorwa Chisvo (30) was facing a charge of theft of trust property when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Ruth Moyo.
The State alleges that in March 2026, the complainant, Lawrence Maindidza, wanted to import a Ford Ranger Next Generation from South Africa.
Maindidza allegedly discussed the plan with Chisvo, who reportedly misrepresented that he could import the vehicle on his behalf.
It is alleged that Chisvo charged Maindidza ZAR260 000 to buy the vehicle on his behalf and have it transported to the Beitbridge Border Post Customs office.
He then asked Maindidza to deposit the money in FNB Bank account number 6309 7653 810, which he alleged belonged to Ford South Africa.
Maindidza made the transfer of ZAR 260 000, and copies of proof of payment can be produced in court as evidence.
The State alleges that Chisvo received the money but failed to deliver the vehicle, resulting in the complainant reporting the matter to the police.
It is alleged that sometime in April 2026, Maindidza followed up on the car with Chisvo.
The court heard that Chisvo further misrepresented to Maindidza that he was travelling to South Africa to collect the car from Ford and bring it to Zimbabwe.
After a few days, Chisvo then informed Maindidza that the said car was seized at the border by authorities over an undisclosed offence.
He failed to avail any proof of seizure of the said car, but he promised to rectify the situation. Maindidza kept making follow-ups with Chisvo, to no avail.
On August 17 2026, Maindidza realised that he was duped and reported the case to the police leading to Chisvo’s arrest.
