A HARARE woman successfully applied for her former partner to maintain their one-year-old child.
Fadzai Makumbe appeared before the Harare Civil Court requesting US$120 per month from Mike William Chigombe.
She argued that Chigombe was failing to adequately provide for the minor. When asked by the court whether she had included all her demands in her application, Makumbe said she also wished to factor in rent, which amounts to US$55 per month.
Chigombe offered to pay US$30 monthly, arguing that he earns approximately US$40 per week.
He further submitted that he was looking after three other children as well as paying rent for his lodgings, and taking care of his parents.
“The money she is asking for is too much considering I have three minor children besides this one, and I also pay rent,” he said.
Makumbe opposed the offer, saying it was far too little to meet the child’s needs. She told the court that the minor requires proper accommodation, food, nappies, and medication, adding that the child is frequently ill.
“Consider where the child is supposed to live, eat, and medicals since he is always sick. US$30 is too little,” she said.
After hearing submissions from both parties, presiding magistrate Ms Hannah Fazilahmed granted the maintenance application, ordering Chigombe to pay US$50 in monthly maintenance with effect from January 31, 2026.
