Harare on high alert for mpox outbreak

Ivan Zhakata-Herald Correspondent

HARARE is bracing for a potential mpox outbreak after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the disease a public health emergency of international concern.

While the majority of cases have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo, neighbouring countries like Uganda and Rwanda have also been affected.

To raise awareness, Harare City Council has issued a public advisory detailing the symptoms of mpox.

“Key indicators include a distinctive skin rash or pus-filled lesions that can appear anywhere on the body,” reads the statement.

“Other common symptoms are fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, muscle aches, headache and respiratory issues such as sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough.

“Unfortunately, there is currently no specific treatment for mpox and available vaccines are in limited supply. The council is urging residents to be vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience any of these symptoms.”
