Residents from Harare suburbs that do not have running taps will in the near future be able to access water as the pumping capacity improves with the phased rehabilitation of Morton Jaffray Waterworks.
Council public relations manager Mr Leslie Gwindi yesterday said the ongoing rehabilitation programme was progressing well.
He said the programme, which started last year, would ensure that suburbs which did not have running water would receive it.
“Water will increase in supply as we increase output at Morton Jaffray waterworks, which will then result in residents from those suburbs in Harare with no running water being able to get it from their taps,” said Mr Gwindi.
Residents of Philadelphia Park in Borrowdale last week started getting water from their taps after 10 years of relying on alternative sources.
Harare residents with no running water have learnt to rely on buying it from water dealers who recently increased the price from US$50 per 5 000 litres to US$90.
The increase in the charges by water dealers was necessitated by the introduction of new tariffs by the Zimbabwe National Water Authority which is now at US$3 per 1 000 litres.
The water dealers who used to get water from various points in Harare, are now getting it from new designated points that are outside the city.
It has become big business in Harare for the water dealers as many suburbs either do not have tap water at all or get water trickling in only for a few days.
