The Harare City Council has started renovating parks in the central business district (CBD) which had become an eyesore.
Major parks in the CBD — Africa Unity Square and Harare Gardens — had become sanctuaries for street kids and unruly individuals who often harass passers-by.
There has been outcry from residents that most of the parks have lost their aesthetic value.
In an interview with The Herald yesterday, city spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme said the renovations were now at an advanced stage.
“We have started the renovations,” he said.
“We are aware that for a long time now these parks had ceased to serve their purpose, so we are taking steps to ensure that they serve their true purpose.”
Mr Chideme said they wanted to create state-of-the-art parks in the CBD.
“We will try by all means to create world class parks in the CBD even if it means bring in other people to help us with ideas, because we want to make sure that they serve their purpose,” he said.
Mr Chideme said they were also inviting investors to partner them in sprucing up the parks.
