A Harare magistrate over the weekend ordered a street teenager who picked up an infant’s corpse and attempted to sell it as beef to be mentally examined.

Stanley Marecha (19) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tapiwa Kuhudzai accused of violating a corpse.

Mr Kuhudzai ordered Marecha to be mentally examined after the State submitted that he was showing signs of mental instability.

Allegations are that on July 4 at around midnight and at corner Julia Zvobgo Street (formerly Rezende Street) and Agostinho Neto Avenue (formerly Speke Avenue) Marecha approached the informant, Mr Blessed Paradza carrying a big black plastic bag which had empty plastic bottles.

Marecha allegedly then told Paradza that he was selling beef.

Mr Paradza asked to see the meat and Marecha removed a smaller plastic bag from the bigger plastic he was carrying.

Upon opening the plastic bag that was when Mr Paradza discovered that the beef Marecha was claiming to sell was an infant’s corpse.

The matter was reported to police and the corpse was subsequently taken to the mortuary at Parirenyatwa Hospital for proper handling pending further investigations.

Marecha will return to court on July 18 and reports from three mental health practitioners are expected to be presented to the court for a way forward to be determined.
