The water crisis in Chitungwiza is set to deepen after Harare City Council reduced daily water supplies to the town from 30 megalitres to 19 megalitres.
Although Chitungwiza Town Clerk Mr George Makunde refused to give reasons for the water cuts, The Herald understands the town owes Harare millions of dollars in unpaid water bills.
“It is true there is no water and we have alerted the City of Harare that the water supply cuts from 30 megalitres to 19 megalitres will worsen the plight of residents,” he said.
“Nobody there (Harare City Council) has told us as to why they reduced water supply to 19 megalitres.”
Chitungwiza residents were facing severe water shortages due to low supply of water from the City of Harare.
Mr Makunde appealed to the residents settle their bills.
“There was a breakdown last week but this has been resolved. Residents should pay their water bills,” he said.
The town clerk appealed to the City of Harare to supply 30 megalitres of water to lessen the water crisis in the town.
The Harare City Council public relations department declined to comment on the matter.
Residents in Chitungwiza said that they used to get water supplies twice a week and now they were hardly getting anything.
Residents now fear that there could be fresh outbreaks of water-borne diseases.
