HARARE City Council says 120 000 residents are treated for HIV/Aids related ailments in the city everyday. According to minutes of a full council meeting, the rate of infections is increasing.
“On Aids statistics, council was advised that the prevalence at the national level is at 15 percent and in Harare the prevalence is at 13 percent.
“Concern was expressed at the rate of sexual transmitted infections, which was ever increasing and in Harare the rate was alarming with some being repeatedly re-infected,” reads the minutes.
“In Harare 120 000 patients are in receipt of Aids-related medication on a daily basis.” Council said the statistics show that people were irresponsible in their sexual behaviour.
“Compared to other countries, the representative from National AIDS Council advised that Zimbabwe had made great strides to combat the disease. He, however, underscored the need to put more effort to eradicate the disease,” further reads the minutes. The NAC urged councillors to take a leading role in fighting the disease.
“He therefore urged councillors to take a leading role and engage relevant stakeholders in order to prevent STI and STD infections as well as HIV and AIDS diseases in their respective wards. “Council was urged to play its part effectively to eradicate the disease.”
