ZANU PF Harare Province Youth League yesterday embarked on a clean-up campaign at Overspill shops in Epworth, as Government intensifies efforts to build a sustainable environment management and waste disposal culture.

This is in line with the declaration by President Mnangagwa to uphold environmental fundamental rights and freedoms, which is a constitutional mandate provided for in the section 73 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

The clean-up was conducted in collaboration with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the Youth League has set aside every Friday of the week as the National environment cleaning day.

“As the Youth League we have decided that we will have a Clean-up campaign every Friday of the week so that we keep the environment clean,” said ZANU PF Harare Provincial Youth Chairman Emmanuel Mahachi.

Provincial Environment Manager for Harare Metropolitan Mr Robson Mavondo said as EMA, they are calling upon all stakeholders and communities to be part of the national clean-up campaign.

“We are having clean-up campaigns every Friday with the communities, stakeholders and vendors. We have dedicated this April for clean-up campaigns as we are celebrating Independence,” he said.

Meanwhile, Harare Central Constituency residents led by ZANU PF shadow Member of Parliament Cde Loice Magweba and Ward 6 shadow councillor Cde Gabriel Togarepi yesterday held a massive clean-up in the city centre.

The constituency leadership has also taken it upon themselves to clean the city centre every Friday and to help clear the refuse.

In an interview, Cde Togarepi said he and Cde Magweba were worried with the mushrooming of refuse in the city centre which is the heart of Harare.

“A lot of uncollected rubbish was piling up in Harare Central especially in alleys in the Avenues area, on street corners and in the city centre so we decided to mobilise our fellow cadres and clean our city. We support President Mnangagwa’s vision of a clean environment so we will be cleaning our city every Friday,” he said. Cde Togarepi also urged the residents to refrain from dumping waste everywhere to avoid disease outbreaks. Spar Montagu donated bins and refreshments to the team that was cleaning the surrounding area of Montagu shops.
