Geo Pomona Waste Management has outlined its new partnership with Harare City Council for comprehensive waste management, including door-to-door refuse collection throughout the city.

Last week, the City Council extended its collaboration with Geo Pomona, expanding its role from managing the dumpsite to undertaking citywide waste collection.

This initiative has been met with enthusiasm from stakeholders who hope it will help restore Harare’s reputation as the “Sunshine City.”

Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman of Geo Pomona Waste Management, detailed the plan following the signing of the contract.

The company will focus on several areas, door-to-door collection, clearing illegal dumpsites, cleaning high-traffic areas, and road and street sweeping.

In Mbare, the initiative will also include cleaning all streets, bus termini, shopping centres, and major roads.

To improve service delivery, Geo Pomona is investing in state-of-the-art equipment and hiring skilled personnel in waste management.

Comprehensive training programmes will ensure that waste collection processes are efficient and thorough, leaving no area overlooked.

“While we cannot provide exact timelines at this moment, we are committed to sharing updates as our plans progress. We are confident that we will launch the waste collection service next year, helping the city regain its former glory,” said Dr Nguwaya.

Geo Pomona is also prepared to assist other cities if the need arises, demonstrating confidence in their ability to effectively manage waste.

Ms Masuku highlighted their success in transforming the Pomona dumpsite into a professionally managed facility, addressing issues such as uncontrolled fires, foul odours, and improper waste disposal.

Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trusts chairperson Mr Salva Chikomba welcomed the partnership.

“We have heard complaints about refuse not being collected for a long time. The City Council has struggled with a lack of refuse trucks. I believe Geo Pomona Waste Management can play a crucial role in helping Harare with its refuse collection needs,” he stated.

Mr Chikomba emphasised the necessity for collaboration between the council and Geo Pomona to ensure effective waste management and a cleaner city.
