FORMER Highlanders midfielder Vusa Nyoni’s Jupiler League outfit in Belgium, Mons, will probably need some divine intervention in order to avoid relegation.
Mons started off the 2013/14 season badly and their performance deteriorated steadily as the season progressed and on Saturday, they recorded their 17th league loss of the season, falling 1-2 to Club Brugge in front of 25,000 fans.
The gifted left footer Nyoni, who missed last week’s loss to Mechelen, was an unused substitute and his team finds itself anchoring the 16 team log with just six games to go before the season ends.
Mons have just three wins, four draws and a massive 17 losses.
Fellow countrymen Nyasha Mushekwi and Ovidy Karuru had mixed fortunes over the weekend. Mushekwi’s KV Oostended chalked up a vital away win to Sporting Charleroi, winning 1-0. Although he did not score, the former Caps United and Mamelodi Sundowns forward played the whole match.
Karuru, slowly rediscovering his form, was a 72nd minute introduction for Mohamed Messoudi as OH Leuven were beaten 0-2 by Gent.
In England, Bradley Pritchard’s Championship side Charlton Athletic lost 1-2 to former Barclays Premiership outfit Wigan Athletic with the Warriors’ rookie coming in for Marvin Sordell, 17 minutes before fulltime.
Denmark, Czech Republic and Romanian leagues are still on break. Former Motor Action forward Quincy Antipas and Silas Songani, ply their trades for Brondby and Sonderjyske in the Danish Superliga. Former AmaZulu strongman Costa Nhamoinesu plays for Sparta Praha in the Czech Republic while Mike Temwanjira is at Vaslui in Romania.
