ZIMBABWE’S Support Unit volleyball team coach Itsanang Abu Basuthu says their success at the Confederation of Africa Volleyball Region Five Games where they won a silver medal, was as a result of hard work.

Abu Basuthu said the team worked hard to prepare for the club championships.

“It wasn’t easy preparing for the championships given the challenges we faced. I’m happy the team was able to overcome the challenges.”

He said they played as a team hence the good results they achieved.

The police outfit outwitted many to finish second falling to champions Authoridade from Mozambique in Maputo last month.

“I think one of the reasons why we managed to defeat our opponents is that we built the team from the ground. It took us a few years training the team and getting them to develop a synchronised playing skill,” he said.

Support Unit qualified for next year’s African Club Championships and Abu Basuthu said they will start preparations soon.

The team capped its fine performance with two awards. Radios Methu won the tournament’s best blocker while Meffrey Chindumo was voted the best defender.

“We’re looking forward to the African Club Championships and I know that for the players it will be a learning curve,” he said.
