A VIRGINITY test conducted on a 12-year-old girl by her mother exposed a suspected rapist leading to his arrest. Mthokozisi Sibanda’s victim kept the rape to herself until she was forced to expose the suspect following a virginity test conducted on her by her mother.

The girl who cannot be named for legal reasons opened up leading to Sibanda’s arrest.

Sibanda of Colleen Bawn in Gwanda District made an initial appearance before Gwanda magistrate Olivia Mashava Mashaire yesterday facing rape charges.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to January 27.

Sibanda was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

According to the state, sometime last month at around 8pm, the girl was sent by her elder sister to a house close to Sibanda’s.

Sibanda allegedly approached the minor and proposed love to her but he was turned down.

“The accused person then dragged the complainant to his house and ordered her to lie down and remove her panties but she refused.

“The accused then forcibly laid down the complainant and removed her panties and raped her,” said Edward Ndlovu for the state.

After committing the alleged offence, Sibanda threatened to kill the girl if she ever revealed the matter to anyone before ordering her to leave.

The girl did not reveal her ordeal to anyone until the virginity test conducted by her mother.

It was then that she revealed she had been raped.

A report was made to the police leading to Sibanda’s arrest.
