LIVERPOOL. — Have Everton found the next Wayne Rooney?
The original ‘Wazza’ may have left in 2004 but it seems Goodison Park has found a new prodigy.
One young Evertonian, pictured cheering on his club during their Capital One Cup clash with Stevenage on Wednesday night, bears a striking resemblance to Rooney.
Rooney was a staunch Evertonian growing up and burst on to the scene for his boyhood club in 2002 before moving to Manchester United for £27 million two years later.
Everton fans were disappointed to see their local lad move to the other end of the East Lancs Road after the player had once revealed a shirt which read: “Once a Blue, Always a Blue”
Despite the switch, Rooney is still a big Everton fan and even buys the club’s kit for his son, Kai.
But, having enjoyed nearly a decade at United, the England forward said he wanted to leave Old Trafford this summer and new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho admitted he was keen on securing Rooney’s services.
However, the United No 10 looks set to stay with the club after receiving a rapturous reception when he turned out against his west London suitors on Monday night.
Having seemingly missed out on the frontman, Chelsea will be hoping Everton can churn out more talented stars for them to bid for… although fans of the Merseyside club would have a lot to say about that!
New Everton manager Roberto Martinez is already facing a tough time of questioning over Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini’s futures, who have both been linked with moves to Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Rooney has spoken out to thank Manchester United fans for their support at Monday’s Old Trafford showdown with Chelsea.
The England striker has been linked throughout the summer with a move to Stamford Bridge, but receieved a rapturous response from the home crowd at the goalless draw. Rooney took to his official Facebook page to show his appreciation, and post photos of the game.
He posted: ‘Here’s some pictures from Monday night’s game. It was an unbelievable reaction from the fans, so thank you.
“I really appreciate your support. It means a lot.”
Rooney also received ironic chants from the away end, with Chelsea fans chanting his name and singing ‘see you next week.’
However, it is now unlikely the striker will depart Old Trafford, and the club may open talks on a new deal if he toes the line once the transfer window shuts.
United captain Nemanja Vidic was not surprised by the backing Rooney received in the Chelsea match. “The supporters have always supported the players,’ said the Serbian. “Wayne is no different.
“He has been supported throughout the years and I don’t think there was a question he would have been supported against Chelsea.
“He has scored so many goals and won so many trophies. I expected him to receive a good reception.” — Mailonline
